What is the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse?
The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse is a historic navigational landmark at the entrance to the Chicago River on Lake Michigan. Built in 1893, it has guided maritime traffic for over 130 years and is an iconic symbol of Chicago’s waterfront heritage.
What does FOCHL do?
Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse (FOCHL) is a 100% volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving, restoring, and celebrating the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse for future generations.
Who founded FOCHL?
FOCHL was founded in March 2022 by Kurt Lentsch, a licensed USCG captain and longtime Chicago boating community member with a passion for maritime heritage.
Who leads FOCHL?
FOCHL is led by a volunteer board: Kurt Lentsch (President), Marie Huscher (Vice President), Steve Clements (Secretary), and Nick Naber (Treasurer).
Is the lighthouse open to the public?
The lighthouse is not currently open to the public. FOCHL is working toward making it accessible as restoration progresses.
How are donations used?
Donations support the lighthouse’s structural assessment, restoration materials, professional conservation work, and educational programming, with a small portion covering the administrative expenses that keep our nonprofit running effectively.
